Sentinel Peak technical climb & Amphitheatre camping - 3 days
A rewarding three day two night wilderness camping adventure climbing two summit’s on the Northern Drakensberg escarpment. The first is Mont-Aux-Sources 3282m which is the highest peak in the area, it’s a non technical trekking ascent using the chain ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau & the Amphitheatre.
DOUBLE SUMMIT ADVENTURE - NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG
The first Summit is a trek to Mont Aux Sources 3282m after which we explore the Plateau, Crows nest, Ribbon Falls, the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls.
The ascent of the colossal Sentinel Peak 3165m which stands on the Western end of the Amphitheatre is a technical Rock route. It starts out as an exposed scramble up steep grass covered screed slopes to the base of the rock pitches. The summit reveals exhilarating views of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, Tugela Falls & Devils Tooth, the drop below the summit is over 1000m, quite staggering.
Ascent is via the Standard Route, although previous climbing experience is of benefit, anyone who’s fit, confident with exposure & scrambling should be able to climb the Sentinel peak on this route. For those with climbing experience we can include Mcleods variation, a more technical section.
