Our guided overnight climb of Thabana Ntlenyana in the scenic Southern Drakensberg is the highest point in the Drakensberg Mountain Range. The guided climb of Thabana Ntlenyana which stands at 3482m above sea level is the highest African peak South of Mt Kilimanjaro. Meaning beautiful little mountain, she is the Queen in the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
THABANA NTLENYAN VIA SANI PASS - 2 DAYS
GoVertical will transport you from Underberg in a 4×4 vehicle up the dramatic twists & turns of Sani Pass as it winds up the Southern slopes of Drakensberg. Sani pass gains altitude at a steep 1300m over 22km. You’ll pass through the South Africa border post & into the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
The trek starts along the Sani River ascending close to the Southern Drakensberg escarpment with views over the beautiful Mkhomazi Wilderness area. From the summit of Thabana Ntlenyana there is a fabulous view of the Drakensberg range & the Lesotho Highlands.
We spend the night camping on the slopes of Thabana Ntlenyana, your meals prepared for you by GoVertical guides. A final treat before descending Sani pass in a 4×4 vehicle is a stop at South Africa’s highest Pub and restaurant.
THABANA NTLENYANA VIA MKOMAZI PASS - 4 DAYS
Forget the 4×4 trip up Sani Pass, instead you’ll hike from Vergelegen at the base of the Drakensberg range (1500m) up a typical Drakensberg pass. Vergelegen’s undulating grassy hills soon give way to a steeper ascent and tremendous jagged cliffs . Your reward is ever more commanding vistas of Kwa Zulu Natal behind you.
Thabana Ntlenyana stays out of sight until late on the 2nd day. As you pop onto the Drakensberg escarpment, successfully in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, Thabana Ntlanyana will perch ahead of you.
Grand panorama’s await from the Summit 3482m before your return to the verdant valleys of the Mkomazi Wilderness. This is a steep but rewarding hike to the summit of Thabana Ntlenyana, great for fit hikers.
